Field Day

Field Day is May 13, 2016! We will need a parent volunteer to bring, set up, and take down a tent where our class can seek refuge from the sun during lunch and resting periods. Also, a sign that says "Ms. Jazmin's Class" would be awesome to have attached to the tent.

Also, if you wish to send in cold treats or juice etc. please do, but remember that we walk to Daffin Park for Field Day and we can not take coolers or heavy items with us. You must take them and put them under our class's tent.

Be on the lookout for information about ordering our 2016 Field Day class shirt. Our's will be neon green!

GMAS-Georgia Milestones Assessment System

As we get closer to GMAS testing for 3rd-8th students in Chatham County public schools I wanted to share a few tips and reminders.

1. Please help your child feel well rested each day of testing by ensuring that they have gone to sleep early the night before. Children 5-12 years old should be getting 10-11 hours of sleep.

2. Provide a calm and peaceful morning by having everything prepared the night before and waking up on time to not feel rushed.

3. Provide a breakfast with high protein to ensure they are not feeling hungry throughout testing.

4. Ensure your child is well hydrated. Consider sending in a bottle of water that they may sip on during testing. Studies show well hydrated students out perform those that are not, on standardized tests.article about hydrated test takers

5. Provide positive encouragement by urging them to do their very best. Their best is all we are asking for.

Needed snacks for each day of testing:
*If you are able, please send in testing snack Monday April 11 so I can divvy up accordingly. Please let me know if you plan to send in testing snack. We have 13 third graders that will be testing.

1. Cheese Sticks
2. Bananas- read about their value during testing time here last year's gmas blog entry
3. Hard Candy- such as peppermints and lemon heads. The burst of sugar during long testing periods helps them stay energized and focused.

Newsletter March 28

Ms. Jazmin & Ms. Marion
Week of March 28, 2016

A Note from Ms. Jazmin:
Hello Families! I hope that everyone had a wonderful long weekend and that everybody was able to enjoy the glorious weather we had over Spring Break. Hopefully we don't have too many pollen allergy sufferers.

It has been a busy several weeks since I was last able to post a newsletter. We have had the Common Writing Assessment that was given last week, we have had SRI and MAP testing going on since the week before Spring Break, we are in GMAS review land for third year students. Please make sure your child is bringing in the review the day it is due, whether it is complete or not. The homework is driving our review in the classroom!

We finished our read aloud, Shiloh, before Spring Break and the students are anxiously awaiting the movie! If anyone has a copy at home that they are willing to let us borrow, that would be wonderful.

Students made their own individual King Cakes after their lesson with Ms. Lynn about the history of Mardi Gras. I know I learned a lot! Did you know that Mardi Gras (Tuesday Fat) translates to Fat Tuesday from French?! I should have known that as I know French, but it just never dawned on me.

The North America postcards continue to come in! Thank you! I will be posting another photo as soon as I am able to get them up. Keep them coming!

Lastly, thank you to those that came to support our students at our Explorers of the Universe event! All of the students truly did an amazing job. It was a pleasure to see all of the students hard work and pride in presenting their materials and subject matter!

Some suggestions for snack are: precut fruit (apples, grapes, bananas cut in half, oranges, etc.), precut vegetables with hummus for dipping, cheese and crackers, granola bars or chewies, trail mix, applesauce, hummus and crackers, yogurt or Gogurt, graham crackers…  The purpose of snack is to provide a nutritious energy booster when the students need it.  Please keep in mind the nutritional value when choosing a snack.

Explorers of the Universe

Please come watch Charles Ellis Montessori Academy, Pk-8 grade students, present different topics and materials in Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. The presentations are Thursday March 24, 2016 from 5:30-7 in the Media center and front hallway of the school.

I was asked to choose one first grade student and one second grade student to present Social Studies historical figures. This was easy for our class as we already do these types of presentations regularly. Please understand that I would have loved for the entire class to present, but alas I was limited. I chose based on quality of past presentations and ability to handle a large audience of adults.

Please come support our children! They love to show off their skills. I hope to see you there!
