Science Research Presentations and More

The latest Science research topics that your child chose should be ready to present the week of December 12. They have four weeks, including Thanksgiving week. I have asked them to do their initial research in an interactive science text that we have in the classroom. After that is completed, they may research further via books from the media center, internet, Brain Pop videos, etc. After they have finished their research they will begin working on their presentations. I have science experiments and activities that many can include in their presentations and that I will share with them.We also have field trips that week on the 13th and 14th.

This Friday is a $1 Dress Down!!

If every student in our class participates in the Read-a-Thon, that means even if they donate a dollar, our class will receive a $25 gift certificate to the book fair, where I can purchase books for our class! Let's do it!

Newsletter Weeks of October 24- November 7, 2016

Ms. Jazmin & Ms. Marion
Weeks of October 24- November 7, 2016

A Note from Ms. Jazmin:
If you did not come see me during conferences, even if I met with you earlier in the year to go over test scores, please contact me to schedule a conference. There is important information to share with you about your child's progress.

The Historical Figure Presentations have been fabulous! Students have chosen their Science research topics and I will be assigning due dates soon. I usually give the students about two or three weeks to complete their research. Please encourage your child to work on their research in the classroom, as well as at home! They will also choose another Social Studies topic soon. They continue their study of North America.

I went on the first grade field trip this week, "I declare: Meet Thomas Jefferson" and it was truly enjoyable. It was the first time I had been to this one as I have always accompanied the third graders. I learned new things about our city such as that Johnson square was the first square in Savannah and that is where the Declaration of Independence was read in Savannah. Also, that the colony of Georgia had three signatures from it on the Declaration of Independence. There also used to be a large community oven right where the fountain is now and that is also where people went to see what time it was, by using the sundial that is still located there! Our children are so fortunate to live in a city where they can see first hand the things students all across Georgia have to rely on books for!

Also, the Parade of Cultural Fashion, the first of our PTA cultural events, will be January 20, 2017 in the Multipurpose room. We would like any and all cultures represented at this event with traditional costumes! Please click on the link for more information and please sign up to be a part of highlighting our diverse culture at Ellis! Parade of Cultural Fashion I'm dressing my own daughters up; one in traditional Puerto Rican costume and the other in traditional Cuban costume! The head of the PTA Cultural Committee is one of our very own parents from our classroom, Beverly Williams! I agreed to help her with the communications portion and helping her get the word out. It would be wonderful to see a large show of support from our very own classroom community!

Keep an eye out for Read-a-Thon information to be coming home soon! This is a wonderful opportunity for fundraising for our Media Center that serves all of our students!

The Ellis GEP students are continuing to help serve the  homeless community in Savannah by collecting supplies for the Emmaus House. Each day, the Emmaus House serves breakfast and lunch to people who are unable to provide for themselves. We would like to begin by providing supplies needed for serving food. Please donate if you are able to help!

Historical figure presentations have been rescheduled as well. Please click on this link for the new due dates. Please remember that these presentations can be however the student chooses for them to be. The idea is for them to research their topic and then "teach" the class about it. In the past students have created poster boards, timelines, plays, songs, monologues, Power Point presentations, etc.  Historical Figure Research Due Dates

There are a few parents that have not signed up for conference yet. Please email me to set something up, even if we met earlier to go over test scores.

We have received many postcards from throughout North America, but we are still missing some locations! We would love post cards from Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, San Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, and Greenland. We are also missing several of the mid western states. We have not received post cards for the states that do not have pins.

Feel free to share details on social media as well! This activity really helps bring the children into the research.

Cooking Changes

We have been asked to change the way that we do cooking at our school. We are no longer allowed to use the ovens in our classrooms, but instead they can be used down in the Multipurpose Room. This advent significantly changes the ease with which we were able to incorporate cooking/baking in our classrooms. Before were able to cook while the students simultaneously worked, just calling one or two students at a time to help with a step.

Because of this change, I will be asking for parent volunteers that can take a specified group of students down to the multipurpose room to cook on designated cooking days. They will also take down some work with them so that the parent volunteer can still call one or two students at a time to help.

We can still make smoothies in the classroom and use our crock pot!

If this is something you are interested in helping with please send me an email and I will keep a list of parents that I can email when the need arises.

Thank you so much!

Newsletter Weeks of September 26- October 14, 2016

Ms. Jazmin & Ms. Marion
Weeks of September 26 through October 14, 2016

A Note from Ms. Jazmin:
We've had an eventful few weeks and after having conversations with the students I am happy to say that our students are all safe and sound after Hurricane Matthew, and most actually really enjoyed getting to evacuate! The innocence of childhood never ceases to amaze me! If there are any families in need of any type of assistance, please let me know so that I can get you the help you need with the resources that are at our disposal through the district.

I am currently in the process of trying to reschedule our field trips that our grade level had scheduled last week, so please keep an eye out for an update and new permission slips home.

Historical figure presentations have been rescheduled as well. Please click on this link for the new due dates. Historical Figure Research Due Dates

Monday's conferences were rescheduled, but the rest are still on for this week. I am looking forward to meeting with everybody. Please click on this link if you wish to see the conference sign up. Fall Conference Sign Up

I thought we should begin the week with something comforting for the children, so I decided on us making apple butter and biscuits. I hope to share some photos with you!
