Newsletter Week of September 12 and 19

Ms. Jazmin & Ms. Marion
Week of September 12 and September 19, 2016

A Note from Ms. Jazmin:
We've had a busy two weeks! Students have chosen their North American biome to research and have been enjoying the work thus far. They are also keeping up with the math, reading, and language works quite nicely. In addition they are delving into some other science and social studies topics Human Needs and Tendencies(material and spiritual needs), planets/space, rocks, etc.

Spiritual Needs

Material Needs

We also held our beautiful peace ceremony to commemorate International Peace Day. Hearing their sweet voices sing "Light a Candle for Peace" is heartwarming.

I will be out Thursday and Friday of next week as our Montessori training cohort is nearing the end. As part of our training we must complete a certain amount of Montessori observations in American Montessori Institute accredited schools. Therefore, our cohort will be travelling to Charleston! I am looking forward to observing in other public Montessori Lower Elementary classrooms and bringing back some knowledge I can apply in the classroom with your children.

As we continue our study of North America that we began last year, I am asking that students choose a biome from North America and use a research guide to help them study the people, plants, animals, etc. from that biome in North America; Tropical Forest, Desert, Polar Regions, Wetlands, Grasslands, Mountains, and Temperate Forest. They will choose next week. We will transition into South America mid year.

We have received many postcards from throughout North America, but we are still missing some locations! We would love post cards from Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, San Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, and Greenland. We are also missing several of the mid western states. We have not received post cards for the states that do not have pins.

Feel free to share details on social media as well! This activity really helps bring the children into the research.

Also, if there are any parents that are interested in coming and sharing their talents with our community/class PLEASE let me know. This could be baking/cooking, art, crafts, reading with specific students or read aloud to the class. I had asked if any parents were available to help with the Peace Art and I received a couple of emails. I didn't forget, I'm just trying to let things settle a little bit before we begin projects. I promise I will get with you soon!

I like to include food with the continent study. Last year we studied Asia and today as I was reading a book that talks about the Autumnal Equinox and what cultures do all over the world during this time, I read about how in India they eat a particular rice pudding during the harvest season to celebrate. The students that were with me last year remembered when they got to taste the Indian rice pudding that a parent so graciously came in and prepared as she wanted to share her culture. THAT is precisely why I bring food into the classroom. Since we are studying North America we could have typical regional foods prepared from the United States, or typical foods from Canada, or dishes from Central America or the Caribbean...if you have any intimate experience with these foods or cultures please share! The children benefit from these experiences!

Upcoming Healthy and Nutrient Dense snack weeks for 25 students: We do have a low level peanut allergy in the classroom, so we prefer peanut free snacks so that the student may also participate in snack with the class.
Some suggestions for snack are: precut fruit (apples, grapes, bananas cut in half, oranges, etc.), precut vegetables with hummus for dipping, cheese and crackers, granola bars or chewies, trail mix, applesauce, hummus and crackers, yogurt or Gogurt, graham crackers…  The purpose of snack is to provide a nutritious energy booster when the students need it.  Please keep in mind the nutritional value when choosing a snack.
